When I told her that I grew up in Colorado, she said, “Oh, I’ll bet you’ve been skiing a lot!”
I answered, “No, I have never been skiing.”
She couldn’t believe that I grew up near the Rocky Mountains and never went skiing. I told her “I had lots of friends in school that went skiing and many of them came back with broken legs. I didn’t think that was for me!”
Now, don’t get me wrong. I love snow! In fact, one of my most vivid memories is when I was about 8 yrs. old, a blizzard blew through. My two younger brothers and I sat with our noses pressed to the window watching the big snowflakes coming down and the snow piling up higher and higher. We talked about going out to play in it and building a snow man.
Mom said, “Whatever you kids do, don’t try going outside. There is a blizzard and you could freeze to death.”
When she walked into the other room, we three kids resumed our conversation about going outside. One of my brothers was always up for the next suggestion and the other brother always wanted to do “what Mom said.” The long and short of it was that we donned our warmest clothing and went outside.
We built a game in the snow that we called “Fox and Geese.” We were having the best time when suddenly our Dad appeared and corralled us back into the house. I was the one who got in trouble because I was the oldest and I “led” my brothers out into a dangerous situation.
That was my earliest recollection of my love for snow, but it certainly wasn’t my last. We loved getting snow days from school. Those were the days when the buses couldn’t run because the snow was too thick, and would probably turn into a blizzard. One day we had what should have been a snow day, but the buses ran anyway. The bus got stuck on the road between two hills. There we sat in the valley waiting for heavy duty vehicles to come pull us out. I don’t remember anything except that we kids were thrilled that we were late to school!
I fast forward to my late teens when I moved to Colorado Springs. Imagine my delight to live on the side of the mountain facing Pikes Peak. Pikes Peak has snow on its peak almost all year. A couple years later, I moved off Cheyenne Mountain into the main stream of Colorado Springs. One day in late September, we had a blizzard roll through. I was driving to my job on very icy streets. I saw the traffic light up ahead was turning red, so I softly tapped the brakes to begin slowing down when I hit some ice. My car turned completely around and was headed into oncoming traffic. Panic stricken, I was able to dart the car into a driveway and avoided an accident. I just sat there shaking until I could get myself together, traffic lightened up, and I was able to pull back onto the main street. I continued on to work. A couple hours later, our boss told us to get out of there and get back home.
Today I make a trip back to Colorado every summer. I still love to go up into the mountains and see the snow on the mountain tops. I love to sit by the mountain streams where the snow has melted and makes its way down the mountain. It has a way of restoring my soul. I think it is like what David said in Psalms 51:7 “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean, wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.”
