Joe struggled to wake up yet again, getting out of bed was becoming just too hard; after all what did Joe have to look forward to? He had been fired (again) from his job as a welder and could not see anything positive in his future at all. Joe was really worried and depressed by the fact that he had been laid off, this was the second time in 8 months and he was really starting to get a complex about his work ethic. There was also his family to consider, his pregnant wife and 2 small children who looked to him for support.
He had been struggling against the despair he had felt for a long time now and had been wondering why he had so little energy these days and just how he would regain his confidence and purpose in life.
While down at the pub drowning his sorrows on the Saturday night he was approached by a friend (Tom) who had recently became a Christian and Joe didn’t quite know how to react towards his old friend. Joe had noticed a change in Tom but couldn’t quite fathom just what had happened to him.
“Why don’t you come to church with me tomorrow?” asked Tom
“What me? In church! I don’t think I would fit in” replied Joe, “after all isn’t church just for people who believe in God?”
“Well yeah, but God accepts you just as you are, you know” said Tom. “Just come along once and see if you like it, no obligation, you don’t even have to sing”
“Well, ok but if I don’t like it I won’t go again” Joe said nervously.
So, at 9.30 on Sunday morning, Tom pulled up outside Joe’s house.
“Are you ready Joe?”
“Yeah, yeah keep your shirt on” was Joe’s reply, and off they went, Joe was really apprehensive, he hadn’t been to church since Sunday school and didn’t know if he should go in.
“Come on Joe” urged Tom, “it will be alright”
So, in they went and through the service Joe was thinking “maybe this isn’t so bad after all, this story on this prodigal son thing seems to hit a cord with me”
And at the end of the service the Pastor asked all who wanted to come up and give their hearts to Jesus could do so if they wanted to. Before Joe knew it he was standing before the altar and the Pastor was praying over Joe’s life when Wham! It felt like something had knocked his legs out from under him and he was lying on the floor, and a great sense of peace had come over him.
On returning to his seat once he had recovered Joe said to Tom.
“Wow! That was unbelievable Tom, I have never felt anything like that in my entire life, I felt as though there was a dazzling white light all around me while I was on the floor, and right there and then I knew I had to dedicate my life to Jesus, I will never be the same again! I just have this sense of peace and contentment about me; I know everything is going to be ok.”
Joe went home a changed man, and has not stopped telling people about his experience with the white light that surrounded him that day in church and just how it had changed his life.
