Did you know that I’m fifty-eight years old and I’ve never put on a pair of blue jeans? It’s not that I have anything against them. They just don’t look comfortable to me. The stiff blue denim has always been the last piece of clothing I would choose. Today I stand in my bedroom holding a pair of Relaxed Fit Levis, reading the attached note;
Good morning Tim,
I have a special day planned for us. Please put these on and meet me downstairs.
Trust me,
June
I have to smile as I read the note. You need to meet my wife June. She is this tiny, unassuming, southern woman with a heart like no other. In our thirty-two years of marriage she has never tired of helping people. Today that person is me.
You see last week I was at work, late as usual, when I started experiencing; pressure in my chest, or maybe it was more like squeezing, as well as shortness of breath. I’m sure you can guess what it was. The doctor said it was only a mild heart attack and because of my good health and fast response I was lucky.
June though did not see this as luck, but as a warning. Knowing June wouldn’t take this lightly, I wasn’t surprised when, as soon as we got home from the hospital she was on a mission.
Sorry about laughing. I’m not trivializing how my wife responded. You’d probably laugh too if you saw the sweet yet serious expression on her face. Her eyes were in an intense squint and she was biting her bottom lip, all the while dialing the phone calling her prayer team. This group of ladies has been on their knees interceding for friends, family, and strangers for the last eight years. After adding me to their list, do you know what she did? You’ll never guess.
I was upstairs changing out of my work clothes when she got on the phone and called my boss! I don’t know how you would react, but I was pretty upset. I walked in the kitchen thinking she was still talking to her prayer team and heard her conversation;
“Yes Scott the doctor says he should be fine, but I’m still worried. He’s been working so hard lately. The doctor suggested he take it easy for a bit. I was wondering if he could have a couple weeks off.”
I just stood there frozen, like a deer in headlights. I’m sure you can imagine the things that were going through my mind. First and foremost, I was surely fired. “June what are you doing?” I said startling my wife.
Raising her chin stubbornly in the air she just held the phone out for me to take.
“Scott I am so sorry. I had no idea that June was doing this. Don’t worry I don’t need time off.” The words tumbled out of my mouth so fast I didn’t even hear my boss laughing on the other end.
“Tim it’s ok. Your wife is only thinking of you. Take the time off. June’s right, you have been working too hard. Go rest, relax, enjoy. June sure is something special.”
“Yeah, she is something alright.” I said with a slight smile in my eyes.
June stood there acting nonchalant. I continued to glance at her as I finished my conversation and I noticed her lips moving ever so slightly, I knew she was praying for me.
When I hung up the phone I walked over and pulled her into my arms and kissed the top of her head. She exhaled and I felt her body relax. “You should have just told me what you wanted. We could have talked about it.”
“It’s not about what I want.” She said “It’s about what you need and I didn’t think you would agree with me.” She looked at me with pleading eyes. “I don’t want to lose you.”
There it was. So here I am, dressed in my first pair of blue jeans, ready for whatever my wife has planned. How could I deny her, the love of my life? I’ll do my part to stick around here as long as I can. If I’m honest, I don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner. I’m actually excited to see what June has planned. Well, it’s been nice talking to you. You know what’s really funny? These blue jeans fit pretty well.
