Many things kept us out of mischief
When we were young,
Like stilts that made us feel so tall
We could almost touch the sky.
There were baseball cards
Of our favorite team,
Together with bubblegum
We chewed by the wad.
Then there were the suckers
That lasted all day,
That’s when a nickel
Went a long way.
The Maypole was a lot of fun
When we got it going fast;
The secret is to run real hard
And lift our feet up last.
Pom-pom Tackle,
Mother May I, jumping rope,
And Red Rover send him on over
Were always Saturday games.
We loved playing in the
Autumn leaves, gathering, raking,
And piling them,
Just to mess them up again.
Lemonade could quench the thirst
When tongues dragged the ground.
We were too busy to retreat, even for important things
Like bathroom breaks and eat.
Yes there were many things to do,
When imaginations were left to reign
Then we’d sleep away the night
Anxious for the morning light
…To begin all over again!
