you nudge me out of sweet slumber
departing too soon from the warmth of us
long before the stars had chance
to kiss the night farewell.
quietly, I watch the shadow of you
rocking against moonlit wall
clutching the wooden box
lovingly carved and lined
in red rose satin
your treasure chest of us
you struggle in ageless affection
to re-live those pictures and
letters of long ago
pages yellowed now, by time
time we had plenty of
to dream hope and love
to give up ourselves, one to the other
I wait in the stillness of night
wrapping myself in your silence
praying you will call out
I yearn for the one-ness of us
longing to share more moments
beyond those words once written
with bowed head you search my hands
clasped with yours, raised to your lips
the warmth of your breath upon them
thank you Lord Jesus for blessing my life
with faithful committed love of my beloved
by His tender mercy you return
to join me in peaceful sleep
until the waking hour
beckons us to dance under golden rays
of summer's morning sunshine
savoring each new day
of life in the twilight years
