I am afraid of the dark. It comes quietly and swallows up humanity with no respect to age, gender, social status or religion. There is no way to outrun it, no time to gather it in, no place to hide it. Its ugliness is shielded in a kind of beauty that draws in the weak and unsuspecting ones.
It touches all but only cares for self. Seeking company, the dark finds small spaces to make its home and invites all who are lonely to enter. Many knock on the door without hesitation, for they are unaware of their host. Bringing others with them to the gathering is common and all have high expectations for peace and rest, hope and happiness.
I am afraid of the dark. I do not rest for fear of falling in, never reaching the bottom. Keeping watch, I stay awake, even when I am tired and weary. If it approaches I call upon the only thing that will repel it, knowing I cannot do it alone. It is the light that saves me from getting lost in the dark. The smallest amount is enough to dispel the blackness, but I have access to all I need or want. The light shows me my way and opens up opportunities that have never been in my dreams.
Dwelling in the warmth of the light brings comfort and healing. It is a blanket that wraps itself around my heart and soul, bringing a peace that surpasses my ability to understand. All I know is I am safe as long as I stay within its glow. Even though I can see the dark from the corner of my eye, I stay focused on the light and pay careful attention to my boundaries.
When the dark creeps near I reach for the covering of the armor. As I adorn myself with its strength, I feel no heaviness or burden of weight. My head is not pulled down by the yolk and I can hold it up high. The armor reflects the light and the dark runs in fear.
I am afraid of the dark – a healthy fear that keeps me on my toes. I am dedicated to the light and will bask in its beauty for eternity. Thankfulness and joy fill me for I know my home waits for me, a home in eternal light.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1 KJV
