Before long, the contents of my overstuffed purse littered the counter. My wallet, overflowing with receipts, contained enough coins to render it an effective self-defense weapon. A multi-tool, complete with blade, screwdriver, corkscrew, bottle opener and nail file threatened to fall into some dark recess of the poorly lit room. I pushed it away from the ledge and continued my inventory. Three bandages, a partially filled water bottle, five individually wrapped mints from dinner last week, two pens, one of which no longer worked, a small 2008 calendar, three discarded shopping lists, a few loose buttons, a tape measure, tweezers, lipstick, cell phone and dental floss rounded out my list. No comb.
A polite knock on the door indicated someone else needed to use this facility.
“Just a minute,” I called in a sing-song voice, trying to sound much more calm than I felt. Great. I would just have to use my fingers. I did my best to work my wayward locks into submission, but they resisted. Finally, with the help of some of my bottled water, the unruly tresses were tamed.
The knock became more persistent.
“Hold on!” my voice was a little strained, as I tried cramming my odds and ends back into the bag. “Almost ready!” Rats! The wallet wouldn’t fit! I pulled out a few smaller items, stuffed the wallet into the purse, and then squeezed in the remaining pieces. After wresting with the zipper for what seemed an eternity, the knocking grew more frantic.
“All right, all right! I’m coming!” there was an edge to my voice now. I swung the door open and stood face to face with a clown.
“Nice hair, lady!” he commented as he pushed past me into the funhouse. “You should take a good look in a mirror.”
