stretch, crane your neck
peer deep within
this heart of flesh
Go past the noise
through the senseless
sift away the chaff
and cluttered messes
This the sum of all
we’ve come to be
perfection and fall
the good, bad, and ugly
Rich soil that’s tended
ready to receive
the seeds of love
the water of liberty
Feeble stems
raised up high
stretching toward the Son
for eternal supply
Yet round the bend
shadows grow wide
surfaces hardened
all arid and dry
Rocky soil, crusted over
refusing to yield
no growth, no life
like a tomb long sealed
Cowering fears closeted
deep within
running for shelter
continuing in sin
This is the paradox
even confounding the sages
hearts are both hard and soft
a truth for the ages
Here a soft patch
giving God great glory
there are barren field
a sad wretched story
Landscape so varied
part soft with purpose
stands in stark contrast
to the hardened and worthless
But praise be to God!
For His mercy reigns
Hard yields to soft
in the heart’s conquered plain
