I threw the covers off and sat straight up in bed. Sweat was running down my neck and trickling down my chest. I took a deep breath and tried to get my bearings. Where was I? Had I sleepwalked my way to the sauna? Had a freak heat wave hit the Northwest in the middle of Winter? Was I having a nightmare?
Little did I know that my nightmare was just beginning. It was the start of a new age. It was the apex of a life well lived. It was the first mile of a journey that many must walk. It was the wake up call to a startling reality. It was, yes, menopause.
What? When did this happen? Im too young. How could I be struck down in my prime? I thought there must be some mistake. I had decided long ago that I wasn’t going to go through this. Wasn’t God listening? It isn’t fair, I shrieked in my mind.
I sat very still, hoping I wouldn’t wake my husband. This was going to be a blow to him. His little woman was about to become the victim of a terrible disease, an affliction I would never be able to explain to him. I would never be the same. Now would come the hairs on my face and the thinning of the hair on my head. I could feel the wrinkles appearing and my bones weakening. I knew my breasts would now begin their race to my waist. Yes, it was indeed a nightmare of sorts.
The next thing I knew, I had gone from hot to cold. Back on came the covers and I settled back in to my warm, yet somewhat damp, comfy bed. I lay there for a while, dozing and thinking that it must have been a fluke. I must be coming down with something, I said to myself. I felt normal again and drifted off to sleep.
The next few weeks confirmed my worst fears. I was entering the change of life. I had been in denial for a while, but now was feeling more at home with the idea. It is years later now, and I have made it through the worst of the worst. I cant say I have taken it all with grace and poise. There were times when my personality was less than attractive, and I must admit, I hated men at times for escaping this condition. I tried not to take it out on my husband. Actually, I think he came through it all undamaged for the most part.
You have to be mature about the whole thing. You have to be at peace with your womanhood. I didn’t win any awards for conquering menopause, but I did come through with flying colors, I’d say. I didn’t assault anyone. I didn’t turn into the wicked witch of the west. Yes, it was fine, just fine. Now I look back at the whole experience and laugh.
Well, o.k., so I don’t look back and laugh.
