The enticing scent of a tobacco pipe’s smoke or the sight of a friendly Saint Bernard will always waltz me back to Canada. In those days, I was tiny, and I would hide behind my daddy’s leg when my grandfather’s massive dog came galloping across the dirt. The lake water floods my memory, but my father’s face is only a gentle mist.

Canada is my mystery, the land of long-lost grandparents and forgotten cousins. Instead of returning to the land of my father year after year, I would only see this place once. The country beyond my own is now like a fog, heavy and gray like the heart of daddy’s little girl. When he abandoned me, most of my memories followed him. I cried until Jesus wiped my tears away.

My father lives in this mysterious land now, and I still don’t know his face. His voice, though, once reached out to me across the distance, filled with guilt and shame. Wherever he is in Canada, he is forgiven.
