Topic: The Reason for the Season of Christmas (12/04/08)
How, where, and when did the reason for the season of Christmas come about? By nature I am a very curious person, these questions come to mind, and I must seek the answer to said questions. When I find the answer then I am content and can better understand the why of the situation.

I ran to my computer and researched how Christmas came about. Much to my surprise, I found that it was based on pagan holidays. The celebration of Christmas pre-dates the birth of Christ and at that time one of the names used was Saturnalia. Saturnalia was a Roman holiday, which had its beginnings around 753 BC, that was very barbaric and celebrated the rebirth of the sun.

Christian leaders in the 4th century AD tried to convert the pagan masses by promising them that they could continue celebrating Saturnalia as Christians and 25 December was chosen as the birth date of Christ.

Christmas is a combination of many pagan holidays that was celebrated by many different cultures The actual birth date of Christ is not known but it is amazing how our heavenly Father can take something as ugly as a pagan holiday and change it to something beautiful. That may not be the case but I chose to believe that it is so.

Many people who celebrate the reason for the season of Christmas have their own way of celebrating it but for me and my house I choose to celebrate the reason for the season of Christmas as the time that my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was born.

I love Isaiah 9:6 which reads: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Matthew 1:18-25 tells how the birth of Jesus came about. God the Father sent His only begotten Son into the world to undo what Adam and Eve had done through disobedience. All praise, honor and glory goes to God the Father for sending Jesus into the world to become the true reason for the season of Christmas.

Thank you for incorporating the history of Christmas as the pagan holiday it was and still is. I wanted to put this in mine as well, but the 750 word limitation prohibited me, as I get quite wordy in my exhortations to myself (which is mostly how I write!), and ran out of space. Again - thank you so much!
