TITLE: a family reconciled | Previous Challenge Entry

Faith leant against the doorjamb and stared at the setting sun on the horizon as it bathed the sky a beautiful crimson color. Christmas was around the corner and she still hadn’t gotten her husband an appropriate gift. What does a woman give a man who has sacrificed everything, including his whole family, to be with you?
So engrossed was she at the wondrous sight that she failed to hear her husband come home until he came behind her and put his arms around her.
“How’s my favorite girl?” Tony inquired nuzzling the back of her head.
“Great all things considered,” she replied sighing contentedly.
Despite a horrible beginning to the new year the rest of the year had been relatively uneventful. Discounting of course, the fact that that their two families were at loggerheads with one another.
Chaos had erupted as soon as the election results had been announced .As the whole country had gone to the dogs, so had the relationship with her new mother- in- law which had been precarious at best to begin with.
Faith could still remember the harsh words the woman had said as if it was yesterday.
“You are not good enough for my son!” The woman had shouted bitterly.
“Aren’t you people satisfied with what you have?”
As Faith gaped in shock her brother had intervened.
“Well at least we haven’t butchered anyone!” He had exploded angrily as matters that had been boiling for days after Kenya had disintegrated came to a head.
To cut the long story short, Tony’s family had left in a huff when he had refused to take sides and had chosen to stand by his wife. Faith couldn’t help but think that there was a strong reason as to why her mother-in-law felt so ill disposed toward her. At the moment, Both of them were walking on a tight rope as they tried to bring peace to their two families.
“Have you heard from your family?” Faith asked turning sideways to look at her husband.
“No. How about you?”
“I did. My father said that it was time for this foolish feud to come to an end. I think they all finally realized that their misplaced hatred was hurting me.”
“Well I am glad. That’s one down one more to go.” He said smiling grimly.
“I hope they come to their senses.”
As far as Christmas gifts went, reconciling with his family would be the best gift she could give her husband. She was going to try her hardest to see to that.
The next few weeks were a whirlwind of activity as Faith moved heaven and earth to give her husband the best Christmas gift of all; his family. Make headway she did, as so slowly by slowly she managed to persuade his family to accept the invitation to the Christmas party she was throwing.
It was the day before Christmas when faith managed to achieve the seemingly impossible-bringing her mother-in-law to her way of thinking and she was proud of herself. If nothing else, she had earned their respect for changing her mother-in-law’s mind. As the matriarch of her home she was immovable and she Faith had moved her. Talk about Christmas miracles!
“Why do you look like a cat that just swallowed a canary” Her husband asked curiously.
“I don’t know .Maybe it’s because I’ve read this,” she replied holding out a folded note.
She watched as her husband took it and read it, a smile forming in his mouth.
“Well, dare I ask how my mother came to accept your invitation? “He asked hugging her joyously.
“Let’s say that I was determined to give you a Christmas gift that would make you ecstatic.”
Tony laughed happily. No one said that one couldn’t start celebrating Christmas a day early. After all this was a Christmas gift he hadn’t hoped to get this year.
“Thank you,” he said holding his wife close. “This is the best Christmas present ever.”
