They heard a growl, something was out there in the night.
They checked on them. They were all safe, they were all still; they were all there.
The moon was full; its face all aglow, but something else was shining out there, shining here and shining there, a myriad of lofty stars, they were all around. It was the stars that had their attention; each and every one; it was the stars lighting up the night.
They felt something brush by them, it fled away into the night.
They checked them again, they were still safe, and they were still, and they were all there.
A light flashing from the corner of the sky, it drew nearer, nearer. This was the brightest of the stars; one glorious star.
The hair of their skin stood up, they were frightened as they looked up. It was the heavenly star that had their attention, it came upon them; this star was lighting up the sky, this star spoke the first Christmas greeting that night;
Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
They heard a sound, a sound of praise. It was coming from here and there; it was coming from everywhere. The sky was now full of light, lighter than any night. A multitude of voices were now saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
They looked all around and there was no more night; all the darkness had been swallowed up by the light.
They checked them again, they were safe, they were still, and they were all yet there.
They ran to see this babe; they ran to Bethlehem that night. They saw many gathered there; they heard more sounds of praise. It was the babe that had their attention, it was the babe that gave them glee, it was Jesus that lighted up that first Christmas night.
We hear a sound; it is sent into all the earth, We hear words that are sent unto the ends of the world. It is the words of faith. His Words should have our attention; His Words should have our praise; His Words should light up our night.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
