“Maybe three or four days son. I am going to Jerusalem.” He replied, cleaning some of ma’s gold ornaments and a gold chalice, before he tied them in a handkerchief and packed them too.
“Why are you taking all the gold with you ?” I queried.
“We’re going to see a newborn king, son, surely we can’t go empty handed.”
“How do you know a new king is born? We haven’t had any announcements at the village recently.”
“Well, do you remember, I have been studying the position of some of the stars?”
“Yes”, I replied. Since the time I could read, I was interested in abba’s favorite subject, astrology. He had tremendous knowledge in it. People from far and wide come to learn from him.
“I have seen the star, indicating the birth of a new king and a couple of my friends and I are going to welcome the newborn king.”
The thought of meeting a newborn king, thrilled my twelve year old heart. I could not wait for abba to return and tell me about his journey. This was exciting unlike his other trips to universities. Ma and I bid abba farewell and I waited in anticipation for abba’s return.
Three days had gone by. I waited the whole day, out on the porch, but abba didn’t come. Ma discouraged me from staying up all night waiting , so I reluctantly went to bed. All the waiting had made me tired and I wanted to fall asleep, except the moonlit night illuminated my bedroom brightly. Drowsily, I went over to draw the curtains, to find the light coming from a shiny star. I drew the curtain partly to avoid the light but let in the breeze, and went to bed.
It must have been a few hours or minutes that I had been sleeping when this light came peeping in again. This was making me angry. I desired to get up early, so I wouldn’t miss my abba’s arrival and the light was just not working for me. Pushing the bed over against another wall didn’t work either. It seemed as though the star moved too. It was near morning and no more time left to sleep so I just stared at the moving star the rest of the night. I don’t remember when I fell asleep in the brightness.
Ma’s bustling in the kitchen woke me up and abba had arrived. I washed up and ran out to meet him. I was amazed to see him so radiant after a night journey.
“How was the trip abba? How was the palace? How does our king look?”, I rained questions on him.
“The trip was brilliant, but the king wasn’t born in the palace.”
“Oh. Then where was he born, how did you find him?” I wanted to know it all.
“We first went to the palace, but there was no new born there. Disheartened we left and we found the star we had seen in the east, go before us and stop over a manger”, he paused.
“You took directions from a star? King was in a manger!” I was totally baffled and in the back of my mind I reasoned if the star that I had encountered was the same one. By now, abba had roused a million questions on my mind, about the new king, about the palace and the star. Ma served us both, our breakfast and abba and I sat down to satisfy my queries and our hungry stomachs.

“Oh I know the rest of the story daddy, we read it in the Bible at Sunday school”, little Jeff interrupted, as his dad closed the journal.
“Good job son, so you now know why we put a lighted star up on our porch in Christmas.”
“I have one question though daddy”, Jeff asked.
“Yes son.” daddy replied connecting the power cord.
“How did you get this journal?”
“Oh, it belonged to one of our ancestors Jeff”, dad smiled as he hung the lighted star on the porch.
Jeff smiled too, as he stood under the bright shining star and remembered the story and more so because he had such a close relation with Christmas.
