dolls in purple, dolls in pink
now Christmas presents come to play -
decisions are easy – if one could think!
toy trains, toy teddies
the choice is endless -
does one buy an engine then leave it friendless?
Mix and match – and match and mix
the willing heart is poised to choose
should one buy extravagant? Or practical?
A new trinket, or a pair of shoes?
The houses are decorated, as the tree
in trendy shades of blue and white -
more tinsel than the eye can see
is waiting for that Christmas night
And so it comes – that Christmas morning,
to rush, to dive to squeal with glee
with children dancing - and parents yawning -
to open those gifts beneath the tree...
but if we pause here, before surprise
before the presents are unwrapped...
and look into each giver's eyes
you will see a gleam intact -
the shine inside from someone giving
presents hand made or searched-for bought
outshine the artificial ones - not living
a deeper beam is honed and caught.
