“No, I can’t be, I’ve checked and rechecked. I know I’ve got it right.”
“That’s what you said last time, and you had it wrong.”
“I know, but that was last year, I’ve got it figured out this year, I’m positive.”
“I don’t believe you any more. You always say that.”
“Yes, but I’m a year older now, and I can count better. I know more numbers than I did last year. Look, see, this is the number.” Jac pointed to the paper on the wall with a white gloved finger. “This number is where we are today, and this is the number we need to get to. We just count these, and that’s how many sleeps it is till it happens.”
“What if we miss it again this year, you’re not so good with numbers,” Bo whimpered.
“I don’t have to be real good, I just have to be able to count these, the ones on this paper they left behind.”
“Tell me again about the others, why did they leave us Jac?”
“They didn’t leave us on purpose, Bo, they just missed us. But they’ll take us this year, you’ll see. We just have to be ready when they get here. We have to be ready when the number is right.”
“What do you think it’s like, Jac? To be loved? To have someone want you?”
“I don’t know, Bo, but I think it must be really nice. Bo, why don’t you sing yourself to sleep now, I have to practice some more, for when they come for us.”
“Can I help you, Jac? I can pretend to be surprised when you jump up.”
“Alright, I guess so.”

“Bo, are you ready? They should be here any time. Look, there are others coming, to wait with us. See, I told you I knew how to count the numbers.”
“Oh, look Jac, more and more coming, the space is getting really crowded. Let’s make sure we don’t get pushed to the back, and missed again.”
“Don’t push, there’s plenty of room for all of us. Stop pushing everyone, you’ll make me…” Sploing. “Bo, quick, help me, put me back into place, hurry.”
Suddenly there was a loud noise, and the space was bright with light.
“HO! Here we go, alright everybody, into the bag with you, tonight’s the big night, the one we’ve been preparing for all year! Let’s go, come on, come on, I have lots of stops to make tonight. HO, HO, I love this night. It’s the best night of the year. Come on friends, let’s go, there are a lot of homes we have to visit tonight.”
“Bo, RainBo, where are you? Bo, did you get into the bag?” Jac turns every which way trying to see Bo.
“Don’t worry, Jac, I’m right behind you. Tonight! It’s actually going to happen, I’m going to get a home of my own! Someone to hold me, and play with me. You’re going to have a home, too, Jac, all that practice bouncing you’ve been doing is going to pay off, someone is going to love the way you bounce out of the box when the music stops.”
Then the loud, cheery voice rang out again. “Remember, toys, this is your night to find your real home, to be a special gift to someone. But I want you all to remember, this night is done to honor the one who gave the best gift of all. Children all over the world are dreaming tonight of what they will receive tomorrow morning. They are dreaming of toys and candy and lots of good things, but the very best gift they will receive is the gift of your love. You were created to love the children who will call you their own. This love is given in honor of the one who gave His life, so that True Love could enter the world. The love you offer is just a small token of His great Love. For some children, this is the only love light they will ever see, so be sure that you shine brightly. Perhaps your love light will be the one that leads them in the direction of the True Love that arrived on Earth so long ago. You are His representatives, so shine bright, my beautiful toys.”
“Oh, RainBo Bear, did you hear that?”
“Yes, Jac, squeeze my paw, please, I want to sing Jesus Loves Me once more.”
