she smiled at each child in turn.
The cozy house enveloped them all
as Nanny set out busily to cook.
Cold air was whispering,
but the little house was snug.
Each child was expectant
as they waited for the meal to be done.
Christmas Eve was here at last,
the table was beautifully set.
Each year was something different
one they surely wouldn’t forget.
There were peaches from the cellar,
bread, beans, and pies galore.
The room was so excited
awaiting what was in store.
There was no dinner like this one,
not one could even compare.
Homemade jams and jellies
and candy for each to share.
Oh how the colors danced,
the china was carefully laid.
All the family would soon be gathered
To taste what Nanny had made.
The toasty aroma was heavenly,
the fresh butter looked divine.
All eyes were now on Nanny
when finally she said it was time.
