Cookie Making Momma
A Recipe for Success

Post partum depression was not going to overwhelm my little girl Misty again as it did after the delivery of her first child if I could do anything to help or stop it. The birth of my seventh grandchild, which was my daughter’s second child, was born around the Thanksgiving holidays in 2006.

I always enjoyed cooking and had quite a knack for it, if I say so myself. I even had an unusual specialty by most standards, but my husband proclaimed to all “You haven’t lived or tasted anything like it in this world – chocolate gravy with homemade biscuits.” Even skeptics, after one bite, were hooked and anxiously waited on the next batch of biscuits coming out of the oven to be able to savor the very last morsel.

But this Christmas season, I had a specific purpose and plan in mind – to help my beautiful daughter combat the little known medical condition of post partum depression.

I was the mother of four children, three beautiful daughters and a handsome son, all married with children, with wonderful in-laws. God had blessed my husband and me so much, not necessarily with material wealth, but with a strong faith in God that helped us through many dark and joyous days. I was often reminded as I looked at all the blessings God had given me of the verse in Psalms where King David had written,
"Happy is the man whose quiver was full of children.” Not only were we blessed with our own children and now grandchildren, we had many, many family and friends that frequented our lives and home. I was truly blessed.

This Christmas season was different. I put a plan in motion to help my baby girl. Helping my family was something I greatly enjoyed. Anytime, any opportunity I could be with my girls and my precious grandchildren, doing what I loved --cooking, taking pictures and making some great memories was a wonderful day. I myself was in a battle of that dreaded disease cancer. Nevertheless, we became the Powell Cookie Making Team. I knew this would keep by daughter’s mind busy and help her overcome this serious malady. Surrounded by my girls, Tammy, Jody, Misty and Julie, the great cookie baking endeavor began at my home. Everyone loves homemade cookies, especially at the Christmas season, and the order request began pouring in. Although we made a variety of cookies, our specialties were Oreo Cookie Truffles, Sugar Cookies and Sand Tarts. These were by far our best sellers.

We made, baked and sold our mouth-watering treats to family and friends. If the tally was correct, not including the ones we had to sample, well over 100 dozen cookies were sold. That is a lot of flour, sugar and stuff folks! Of course with cooking there are a lot of dishes to wash and cabinets to clean but, all in all, a great time was shared by all.


We baked. We baked some more. We took a lot of pictures, laughed and talked and talked, and I have many scrapbook pictures to prove it. We probably gained a few pounds or more, but what great joy and memories we made. My Misty was able to overcome her health situation and we shared a lot of loving, not only with ourselves, but we shared love by our cookie making efforts and they were enjoyed by so many! Cooking and baking does serve more than a purpose for physical health. It also is good medicine for the soul and mind. If God has blessed you with the ability and talent to cook or bake, share it with someone and be a blessing. God gives each one of us different talents to be able to serve one another. The Bible says the greatest commandment is to love one another. I loved my daughter so much I had to have a plan of action! If you were to ask my family today, we would all say with confidence – my plan was indeed a recipe for success!

Very touching! I can see how much you love your famikly and friends, and especially your children and your."baby girl". It reminded me of my relationship with my own daughter, who is still very young, but I call her and will always call her,"baby girl", it is a name of endearment. Your love for cooking and baking and your time and effort surely became a wonderful recipe and even a "good medicine" for the soul. God bless you and keep on writing hon. :0))

Cooking as a remedy - what a cool thought! I loved how this mom did her best to help her daughter in spite of her own illness. A very nice story. I appreciate you sharing it. :)
