What comfort and security children feel when they have fathers they can depend upon.
As a child my father was more important to me than my mother. When I grew up and had children of my own I wondered why did I love my father more than my mother. I still don’t understand why I did but it helped me to accept my girls loving their father more than me.
This subject gives me the opportunity to explore in my mind who or what is a father.
Having concluded that all human beings think alike, my first thought about a father is one of a great friend. He is a great friend in the sense that he will listen to you. He will give you what you need if not what you want. He will comfort you. He would protect you. My second thought is that he is a role model. You learn from your father, because he is your hero whatever he does you are proud of him and it is possible that you continue to follow him when you become an adult. Thirdly, your personality contains lots of your father’s characteristics that could identify you to many people who knew your father many years ago.
This brings me to the thoughts of the reality of God the father.
In Genesis it is written that God created us in his image and likeness.
Even if we did not believe that statement but when we look at the human father we are seeing that the characteristics of God and man are alike. We know they are alike because Jesus showed and taught God characteristics. Jesus explained to the people that we should rely on God the father. He looks after the sparrows, how much more he would look after us if we put our trust in Him. It is not possible to put our trust in God without knowing God. We can only know him when we recognise that we are in need of God. Only then we can follow God commandments, to love him with all our hearts, minds and souls and to love our neighbour as our selves.
I believe those of us who have an earthly father do love him with all our beings. There is no difference to God. Yes, our earthly father chastise us when we are disobedient, how about God?
