The little boy petted my mom on the head, and then tried to pick up my brother.
'What about me?' I jumped up on the lad almost knocking him over.
My mother gave me a stern look. 'Settle down!' I lowered my head and tucked my tail between my legs.
My brother wiggled free from the boy and ran behind the sofa. “You can have these people, I don’t like them. They smell funny.”
I looked at the boy and he patted his leg with his hand. “Come here little doggy, come on!”
Oh good! Here’s my chance. I ran over to him and licked his hand. It tasted good. When he sat on his knees I licked his face too. He laughed. I wagged my tail.
“I want this puppy,” he said, with a giggle.
I was a little shy when my family first brought me to my new home. Everything was different and I was scared. That first night they locked me in a little room all by myself. I missed my mother. I cried and howled, until my throat hurt. The boy finally came and got me and put me in bed with him.
“It’s okay, Sparky, God always protects us. You don’t need to be scared.”
His warm body felt good next to me and I went right to sleep.

Sometime later, when I was a little older, the family went away for the whole day. The boy’s mother told me to be a good dog and to guard the house. I didn’t know what that meant, but I cocked my head and acted like I understood.
After they left, I curled up on my favorite rug and went to sleep. It wasn’t long before a strange noise woke me up. I lifted my head and perked my ears. Someone was coming in the back door. At first I thought it was my family, but they never enter the house through that door. Then I heard footsteps and picked up a strange scent. The hair on my back stood up and I growled. When I saw the intruder I jumped up and bounded toward him. I chased him outside to the edge of the yard, but he scrambled over the fence before I got a chance to bite him. I stayed there and waited for him to come back for the rest of the day. When I was sure he was gone for good, I went back into the house. I turned in a circle, and then plopped down on my rug.
Later that evening, when my people returned home, I got up and yawned and stretched. Mom noticed the back door was wide open.
“Why’d you leave the door open?” she asked the boy.
“I didn’t,” he replied. “Sparky must have opened it.”
“Dogs can’t open doors.” She thought for a moment, and then shook her head.
“You probably didn’t close it tight and the wind caught it,” Dad concluded.
“Maybe so,” Mom said. “If someone did tried to break in, I’m sure they could have taken anything they wanted, while the lazy dog slept all day.”
“Maybe a burglar did come in and Sparky chased him away!” the little boy said as he scratched my ear.
“You’ve got quite the imagination, son,” Dad laughed, ruffling his hair. “That dog wouldn’t hurt a flea.”
The boy looked at me. I wagged my tail. He smiled.
