Want to know the number one television series in the United States? ABC’s new hit, Desperate Housewives, which airs on Sunday nights. Want to know what all of the hype is about? In a word...desire.
The new series focuses on a group of housewives who are desperately seeking life’s purpose. Featuring everything from mystery and murder to stay-at-home moms and promiscuous young wives, this new series has hit a chord in our society sparking a following of millions of viewers. And, if you think the church isn’t watching...think again. I tuned into a Christian radio talk show a few weeks ago. The topic? “Desperate Housewives & Christians; Guilty or Overreacting?” Many of the Christians phoning in, felt that the church was simply overreacting to the immorality portrayed in the series. One viewer described being more intrigued with the mystery presented in the series than the adultery and lust. I’m now reluctant to say, but initially...I agreed. Yes, I’ve watched “Desperate Housewives” (most of one episode and bits and pieces of a few others.) Looking back, I don’t see why I watched even a fraction of one episode. My seduction started out innocently enough. I was flipping through the channels one Sunday and stopped on my local ABC station. Right away, it was obvious that some mystery would be unfolding and I just love a good mystery. A couple of the scenes were a bit risque, but I reasoned, “Hey, what’s not these days?” I flipped the channel briefly when a scene featured a married woman in her late twenties having a sexual affair with her seventeen-year-old lawn boy. As an adult who ministers to teens, I was actually sickened by this relationship, but I tuned in again once the scene was over.
Over the next few weeks I found myself in front of the television, in my bedroom, away from my children, tuned into a series I didn’t want them to see their mom watching. I became quiet apt at flipping channels to avoid scenes that “sickened me.” I did feel convection, but I would reason it away. Then, one day, I read Proverbs 11:6 which says “...the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.” In one swift moment, I realized that I had accepted the world’s desires as my own. In doing so, I found myself drawn into a trap.
God has wired us to desire. It’s a desperate, deep, and longing need within the soul of every human being. When desires aren’t met by Christ, the soul will search desperately for anything that will fill the void. My dear fellow Christians, we simply cannot be like the world or we will be “trapped” just like the world. Our consistent faithfulness to Christ, is the only way we can show a lost world the way to the only one who can fill their desperate desires.

Your piece is well written, flows smoothly, and your points are clearly made. It held my interest throughout, probably because I could relate to it so well! Great job!
