“Lord, what should I do?” I asked. “My mum-in-law is so stubborn. It’s so difficult to teach her. On the other hand, my dad-in-law, he’s just not willing to try new stuff!” As I reason with God, one word comes to mind - Patience. “Wow, but it’s more than 5 months. I think I’m bursting already. But you’re right. I know I need to be more patient.”
Just before Christmas, my dad-in-law was admitted to a medical facility for hyponatremia, a low salt condition brought about by a new medication for his hypertension. In addition, he also has diabetes and prostate enlargement, which cause frequent urinary infections. To prevent further deterioration of his health, his physician suggested lifestyle and diet changes. “There’s no other way! He needs to change to a healthier diet. No more sedentary lifestyle. Brisk walking is best.”
My husband and I proposed for his parents to move to our place so I could take care of the diet, but they were adamant. We acceded, and I was given the task to train my mum-in-law to be the caregiver.
“Go high on complex carbohydrates, vegetables and fruits. Be moderate on nuts, fish and lean meat. Skinless chicken is good. Avoid animals and trans fats, refined and processed foods!” I advise her. Simple enough, until I learn my dad in-law doesn’t like chicken or fish. His favorite is fatty pork and he has high cholesterol. To top it all, he’s a picky eater and has a mind of his own.
My mum-in-law, on the other hand, growing up in the era of The Second World War, was deprived of a formal education. She doesn’t understand much about nutrients. I have to start from scratch, explaining the food triangle, and filling her in on the nutrients available in different fruits, vegetables, legumes and lentils. Then, I have to guide her on suitable ways to prepare the dishes to prevent nutrients loss.
“How I wish they would move here! It’d be so much easier for everyone.” Selfish! That’s God’s reminder for me. “Sorry, Lord. It’s tough going over and over the same issue with them. Not only do I have to keep reminding my mum-in-law who keeps forgetting, but I have to cajole my dad-in-law too. I’m tired and drained.” Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength! “Amen, Lord! You, indeed, are all knowing. I repent for my selfish thoughts and also for not depending on you. I’ll do my best for my parents-in-law. In your time, you’ll make all things beautiful. Thank you Lord.”
Refreshed, I allow the past events to linger on my mind. Strange, unlike before, I see a different perspective. My parents-in-law always thank me for my time and effort. They actually appreciate me! How can I be so blind? Now, I remember my dad-in-law never fails to brisk walk every evening. Being a sedentary person, this takes great effort. Despite their age, they’ve really tried. Yes, there’s no other way, but to be patient and persevere.
