A Letter to my Mother in Law



Dear Mum,

You left this earth with words unspoken. You weren’t told what a wonderful treasure you were; one of the greatest gifts I had in life was to walk with you. A small journey in hindsight but filled with profound vision.

I want to thank you:

Thank you for being a mother to me, when I needed a mother the most, for stepping into the gulf.

Thank you for your unreserved giving of your son to me. You worked hard to make him the man he is and then you gave him over to a green young girl. You watched silently as I learned the craft of wife and mother, never displaying your wounds, while you gently tended mine.

Thank you for your reflection in my children; for my brown eyed beautiful daughter – so like her Gran, with a love of gardening and good things growing; for the gentle caring nature of my son, with a compassion for others, just like yours; for my lovely baby girl, so skilled and gifted in music, which flowed from your veins to hers. They have all grown and followed your strong leading, taking their place in their community, reflecting your values of home and resolute uprightness; of honesty, integrity and loyalty.

If I could inherit only a portion of your faith, patience, humility, gentleness and wisdom, I would be rich.

You have left your imprint eternally on my spirit. You are with me forever, in my children and in the quiet precious corners of my mind; I will love you always.

What a precious letter from a very sensitive and caring daughter-in-law. Just writing it must have been very liberating. They both loved and deserved each other. Beautifully written.

This is just right--filled with love and tenderness. How wonderful to see her in your children and I'm sure you there's much of her in you, too!
