I have had two mothers in my life, one who gave me life, and the other took that life and made it into something wonderful. She in turn became the mother of four great kids who call me Dad.
As a lad, I suppose I didn’t really give my Mom the true honour and respect that she deserved. She is the one who taught me right from wrong. Like a lot of young people of the day, I had to learn many things the hard way. As the Bible says in Proverbs 22: 6, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” And again, in Proverbs 13: 24, it says, “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him” (NIV). I’m sure she really loved me.
As I watched my wife give birth to our children, and the loving care she gave to them, I learned to appreciate all that my Mom went through.
Looking back, I can see the love and devotion she had for me and my siblings. Although I didn’t see it at the time, I see it now. Most of the disciplining fell on her shoulders as my Dad had more than enough problems just to eke out a living and put bread on the table. I am most grateful for all she did to scrape and save, just to bring her brood through the hard times of the great depression. Mom made our clothes and put patches on our elbows and knees as our clothes became tread-bare and skin appeared through the material.
As Mom, along with everything else that needed doing, she was the nurse of the family. I remember as a child I badly burned my hands; Mom boiled tea and bound my hands with strips of clean cloths that she had ripped from an old bed sheet that she soaked in the tea, rich with tannic acid. Her presence of mind and quick action saved my hands from serious scaring.
As I watched my loving wife, the mother of our children, give of herself so that we, as a family could have a comfortable home-life; I realize the value of the role that all mothers play in the well-being of their families.
Both of these lovely ladies were stay-at-home moms who gave of themselves unselfishly so that their families could have the best that was possible. Both of these ladies are now in Heaven where they are experiencing the rewards for their faithfulness to their Lord and families.
I am sure my Dad would agree with me and the writer of the Book of Proverbs, who said in chapter 18 and verse 22, “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord” (NIV).
