We never met her until her third and latest live-in died and she decided she needed relatives to take care of her now. She came from a shack in the Iron Range where poverty was life.
TV was sinful and corrupt and most likely unknown to her. So when we had our TV on she turned the rocker around so she wouldn't have to watch but couldn't resist turning to peek when we laughed at a scene and she thought we weren't watching her.
Each morning was the same routine.
Her steps were heavy and slow as she clomped down the steps and into the room. She grabbed her cup off the table, walked to the sink and ran the water until it was hot enough. Filling her cup, she turned back to the table and set the cup down. Then easing herself into the chair, it groaned under her weight.
A bowl was filled with corn flakes, the only cereal she would eat and she used both hands to mash them down. Then she spooned on slices of peaches and some of the juice. On top of that she poured equal parts of water from her cup and Carnation Evaporated Milk.
And we heard again her arguement that Carnation is the only kind of milk to use. The other kind comes from cows. Carnation comes from a can.
