“I think you will learn the words soon enough, Noah. You shouldn’t worry about it.”
“Well, Mommy, you know that Daddy is color blind. He can’t see the colors that I see. He says the colors all look alike to him. What if words are like that for me? Please make me an appointment I need to know if I am word blind.”
So his mother gave him a hug and promised him she would make an appointment assuring him once again that he probably didn’t need to worry about it too much.
The eye Doctor gave him a thorough exam. “You have very healthy eyes”, she told him.
“Well”, why can’t I see words? I think I should be able to.”
“Noah, I see here that you are 4 years old, Is that right?”
“Yes, and I have been trying to see words for a while now.”
“Tell me, Noah, can you see letters?”
Yes, I know all my letters, there are 26 of them, but sometimes I get the d and b mixed up”.
“Lots of people get those mixed up. It is great that you already know all your letters. Your brain must be working very hard for you to know all that. Your brain is still growing, Noah, and it can’t learn everything at once. Today you know your letters and as time goes by and your brain grows it will begin putting the letters together and making words that you can read. You just need to give it a little more time. When you are six if you still can’t see any words you can come back again and we will do another check, but I think you will see the words. I think it is safe to say that you are not word blind.”

This is a true story about my grandson who had to learn for himself that often we have to grow into the things we want to do. Sometimes just having the desire is not enough to make it happen.
He is 17 years old now and has learned to love the way words come together. He is no longer word blind.
