"Wake up Sharni!" It was Mother, calling from the kitchen. "You're going to school today!"
Sharni sat up in bed, rubbing her eyes. Yes, she really was going to school today, because yesterday had been her birthday. She was now five years old. She was a BIG GIRL now. What fun! She wriggled her toes in excitement. She had wanted to be a big girl for so long.
Now she was going to have her own classroom, just like her big brother and sister. She was going to have her own teacher, with her own desk and her own books. When she heard the bell ringing to go into the classroom, it would be saying to her, "Hurry inside Sharni, it's time to learn something new." She was going to do what it said, and go inside straight away. She was a big girl now! She slid out of bed, smiling the biggest smile you have ever seen.
"Hurry up Sharni," called Mother. "Are you dressed yet? Have you washed your face, brushed your hair, and cleaned your teeth? You're a big girl now!"
Sharni reached for her new school clothes, slowly rubbing her hands over the pretty spotted blouse and the blue skirt. She couldn’t make up her mind what to put on first.
"Oh," said Mother as she entered the room, "You haven’t finished dressing yet. You can put on your own shoes and socks too and button up your buttons. You're a big girl now!"
Sharni’s smile slipped a little. She scrambled to pull on her blouse and skirt, bent to put on her shoes and socks and ran into the kitchen for breakfast. But she was too excited to eat much. In fact she was so excited, she knocked her cup off the table.
“Oh, there’s a big mess on the floor, Mother!” she wailed.
“Well Sharni,” said Mother, “You can clean it up yourself, you’re a big girl now.”
As Sharni swept up the broken pieces, her smile was nowhere to be seen. It had disappeared.
"Sharni," Mother said when breakfast was finished, "You can tidy up your room and put all your school things in your bag. You're a big girl now!"
"Uh, oh!" said Sharni, her mouth now drooping like the sad clown at the circus. "I thought being a big girl was going to be fun! It sounded more like fun when I was just four"
"Well, Sharni," said Mother, "It is fun being a big girl, because when you are big you can do lots more things than you could when you were little. But you learn how to do things by doing them yourself, and not leaving them for other people to do. And one day, you will find you can do ever so many more things than when you are just five years old.
As you do more and more things yourself, you find yourself becoming bigger and bigger! Until one day you'll be as big as Mother, and will be able to do all the clever things that a mother can do. Don't you think that will be fun? Well, it's best to start doing extra things right now when you are five, so that you can grow into being six next year. Then you will be well on the way to being a really big girl.”
“Oh,” thought Sharni, “I guess I’m still just a little bit big girl right now, so I had better start doing more things for myself, because I really do want to grow into being bigger.”
As she kissed Mother goodbye at the school gate, the school bell began to ring. Sharni was sure she heard it say, “Hurry inside Sharni, and have a lovely day, learning to be big.”
Sharni’s smile came out of hiding as she skipped up the steps and into her very own classroom. She was well on the way to becoming a really big girl now!
