Each and every week I pray to our Father in heaven for the Sunday school. I want the family of God on Sunday morning to realize that these children are about to meet the Lord at their own level.
These children may not get a three-point sermon, or a sermon built for the intellectually elite. You know the kind I mean? Their are those sermons that are so finely interwoven with current events that the listener marvels at the wisdom of their pastors understanding in how to communicate the Gospel within today’s social atmosphere. (Not that this is a bad thing in it self, but it is certainly not for the understanding of children.)
Children may not receive praise for financial blessings that can touch lives on a worldwide scale, or they may not care about the bursting thermometer on the wall indicating a record-breaking fundraiser, or they may not even understand or be aware of the heartfelt desperation from a family being prayed for, because of a child losing a fight against leukemia.
What they do get is the joy of singing out of tune with a pure heart, or running into their parent’s arms with smiles on their faces knowing that yes, Jesus loves them, and the encouragement from the teacher who takes the time to focus on the simplicity of a special need, (even though they now have there own need to go home and get the green glitter out of there ears.)
They are filled with wonderment and innocents. They are willing to tell their friends to come with them to the next Sunday service claiming that, “It’s fun!” They are not yet tainted by the gossip of the judgmentally ignorant. In Matthew 18:3 Jesus said, …“Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. (NKJV)
What I have learned by the children in Sunday school is to come just as you are, and receive who He is.
Jesus is the “Good Shepherd,” and His sheep hear His voice.
I believe Jesus’ smile beams most broadly when hands of the innocent are raised in praise to Him… even if covered in macaroni and glue.
