Gene was watching the new years celebration on television. The years seem to have flown by. Picking up his picture album on the coffee table Gene felt a twinge of sadness. Laura was gone now for five years. It was in the summer during the hottest part of the year.
Laura was walking home from a friend's house. Today she was in a hurry so she took the path next to the road. Most of the community rode bicycles on it. Laura didn't like to ride she enjoyed walking. Very often she would cut through the woods and come out in back of her house.
Laura was pretty, thin and, full of life. Her short brown hair tossed in the wind forming a pixie effect on her face. She was always laughing. Everything was fun and she loved life.
At fifteen she was admired for her ability to make peace no matter what the situation. Gene and Laura would fight but always there was a strong bond between them. Dad would threaten to ground us for life. Only three years older he felt responsible. Gene had always looked after his sister. Her picture still graced the mantel over the fireplace. Gene knew she would have been upset with him for placing the blame on himself.
After Laura's death Gene was lost in sorrow he felt he should have taken her home. He had plans with his friends to go to see a movie so he told her to walk. It was only five minutes.
Every year as the new year entered he would remember. At first sadness overtook him so much so that he would stay in for days. It was an emotional event he just couldn't get past. It was during this time he met and came to know Robert. He was invited to activities at the Christian church.
Robert was a real nice person always polite and kind to everyone. He was known to be one of those Christians. Gene had always avoided him.
Not very many he ran around with would even speak to Robert.
It was a very enjoyable afternoon. Gene agreed to attended church the next Sunday. He kept going back there was something to this religion. Gene felt a need to fill a need the empty space in his heart.
After two year's Gene became one of those Christians as he used to call them. With love and peace in his heart he has thanked God every day for bringing Robert into his life.
He now celebrates the new year because he became filled with the spirit
of God. He has been able to deal with Laura's death. God gave him the acceptance and strength along with the understanding that he was not the
person who killed her it was the drunk driver's responsiblity.
