SheÕs changed in the last nine years. What I mean by that is that she has grown substantially in her faith. Before Dad died, she looked to him, and others for spiritual wisdom and leadership. After all, doesnÕt it say something about subservience in the Bible? Some women Ð dare I say most Ð nurtured and raised in the 50Õs actually believed that their role was that of student rather than teacher. I sat for many hours on dadÕs knee while he read Bible stories. He taught my Sunday School class and lead our church youth choir. My mom, well she made sure I was dressed nicely and my hair was combed before we left for church.
As I grew up, I came to realize that no matter how much I learned from my dad Ð and I learned much Ð I can only imagine how much more I would have learned if my momÕs role was more active than passive.
Today, sheÕs a giant of a Christian, who I look up to and admire both for her strength and her humility. Granted, as ChristianÕs we are supposed to grow in our faith Ð grow to become more like Christ. With my mom, itÕs more than growth. ItÕs a fervent desire to (insert the ArmyÕs motto here) be all she can be, and sheÕs doing it alone. No longer is she dependent on a person or persons to show her the way or hold her hand. Christ is her teacher and thatÕs okay because her independence has made her stronger, happier, more confident andÉ my hero.
Truthfully, sheÕs always been my hero. And thatÕs the picture I have hanging on my hallway wall.
