Topic: Mothers (05/02/05)
You never quite understand what it feels like to be a mother until you become one! I remember the day I found out I was pregnant for the first time. (I took 3 pregnancy tests!) I suddenly had an overwhelming feeling of responsibility. I knew that I was carrying a precious gift from God. What I didn’t know was just how much responsibility this birth would truly be!
After giving birth, to a beautiful baby girl. I realized that I am responsible not only for food, clean diapers, and lots of love, but also for things I never had thought about. For instance, I realized someone must watch the nursery during choir practice. If we didn’t have childcare, I couldn’t sing in the choir. So right then and there, I started a list. I also realized I was responsible for making sure grandparents spent time with her, childcare was above reproach, and the carseat was buckled in correctly!
I thought I had it figured out and then she needed to go to Preschool. So now I had the responsibility of choosing a preschool and the right teacher. I had to choose what curriculum of learning she needed to pursue. As she has progressed in school, I realize that my responsibility has increased significantly because I have given birth to an incredibly gifted child. When you have a child with a higher I.Q. than you or your spouse, you become responsible for making sure you provide as much as they need but not too much. Very scary!
Now, as she is growing up, I realize I am going to be responsible for holding her hand when she doesn’t win the science fair, stroking her head when she loses that first boyfriend, choosing a school in which she is around positive influences, and teaching her how to be prepared for motherhood in her future. The responsibility can be so overwhelming at times and often I feel unqualified to do this job. It is at those moments that I realize I had a mother with great responsibilities that prepared me for this and I know we will make it through!

Funny how we never quite grasp some things until we come to experience them ourselves. That is when we transition from taking our mothers for granted to appreciating them for who they are and have been in our lives. Thanks for reminding us not to take our mothers for granted.
