About a month ago Anna decided she didn’t want to look at the dogs any more. “What’s the use?”, she said, my mother is never going to let me have a dog. I guess I’ll have to wait until I have a home of my own.”
“We’ll just have to keep praying about it” I said.
“You always want to pray about everything, Grandma, I don’t think God can change my mom’s mind. I might as well get over it.”
Three weeks ago, I heard about a couple of Standard Poodle puppies someone wanted to sell. I mentioned it to my daughter, Anna’s mother, during a casual phone conversation. She said her usual. She wasn’t ready for a dog. I said okay, just thought I’d mention it since we both knew that Anna’s dream dog was a Standard poodle.
It wasn’t ten minutes later, my daughter, called me back with questions about the pups. I gave her the answers I knew. And when I went to visit her later that afternoon she was full of more questions. She ask me to get more information. I did.
Eventually during the course of that week she and her husband agreed to meet the people with the pups. It would be at our local Farmer’s market on Saturday. It would be discreet and Anna would not know the reason for meeting these pups.
Anna did not understand why her mom spent so long talking to a stranger about her dogs, but she enjoyed playing with them and one of them obviously became her favorite. He was 30 pounds of apricot happy jumping up and down around her.
When it became clear that Karyn was satisfied with the puppies, I said “Well, Anna, If you could have one of these, which one would it be?”
Without hesitating for a second, as if the question might be withdrawn, “I want this one”, she yelled pointing to the apricot bundle of bouncing fluff.
The next day the whole family went to pick up the dog and bring it home. They were all very excited about this new member of the family. They discussed several names but the one they decided on was just right. They named him Felix because it means HAPPY.
Since that day, Anna and I have discussed how all this took place. She said, she didn’t really catch on that her mom was looking at the pups for her and as she played with the pups and her mother kept asking questions hope started rising in her heart. But she was afraid to let it rise to high in case it was a false hope and it would hurt too much if it fell.
“ See”, I said, “prayer does work. God can change someone’s mind.”
“This time you are right, Grandma and I am so glad.”
The whole family loves Felix. He has become a real member of their family. They don’t know what they would do without him. He makes them all happy.
