In my world of safety
I could only look out and see,
so many kinds of people
with so many ways to hurt me.
There was a time, many years ago
when I first ventured out,
I found that the people I trusted most
where the ones that instilled my doubt.
I ran back to my world of safety
behind my closed door,
vowing never to let anyone
ever hurt me anymore.
So many times I’ve been encouraged
to give it just another try,
only to end up running back
trying not to let them see me cry.
As the people I loved and cared for most
closed me out from their lives,
I searched deep within my soul
to find a reason why.
So many years of loneliness,
and living with a broken heart,
so many years of hurting
while watching those I love depart.
I stepped outside my would of safety
way too many times,
how many chances can I take?
I have to draw the line.
So I have come back to my world of safety
behind my locked closed door,
to never again to let anyone
try to hurt me anymore.
And this is the way I will live the rest of my life
until it comes to an end,
never trusting or being loved by anyone,
but to never be hurt again.

I Am a Rock - Simon & Garfunkel.
Poetry allows the reader to catch glipses of the person who lives within us; often a person we intentionally keep hidden. This piece offers such a glimpse. Well written... but profoundly sad.
