I heard the call of the red winged bird
Across the meadow there.
I looked but saw him not.
Yet heard him call once more.
The call came nearer, so
I stilled and soon
The feathers of his reddened wing
Fluttered passed my ear.
I looked right and left,
Then up and down.
And spied him in the tree--
The end of the lane, see there!
We stared for the longest while
Until closer still he dared.
I glimpsed his reddened wing
As he wheeled through the air.
My eye did strain to follow
Him to his home afar,
But lost its quarry when the creature
Dipped, dove, and lit again somewhere.
I heard his call once more
On his way to some fair repose.
I sighed, arose, and
Set for mine as well.
Glad times the red winged bird
Brought to me this day.
Tomorrow I will return
To search again for his reddened wing.
