There are no spectators here…everyone has a job.
Just as each member of a baseball team has a position, every individual has a role to play. Our words, our actions, our attitudes—all have an impact on the hearts of people around us. God has given each of us the work of sharing His love with others. There is no time to sit around watching others; our work is ever-present and has eternal consequences.
Back each other up!
We are all just imperfect people, certain to drop the ball or miss an important play sometimes. We desperately need to know others are in the game with us, ready to back us up. Just as we need the support of those around us, we need to be alert to back up others when they need us. Our job is never to intercept their plays, just be ready to help out if they need it!
Talk to your team-mates; tell them your intentions.
The spectacular crash of two zealous outfielders going after the same ball is the perfect picture of the collisions caused by misunderstanding the needs or intentions of others. As a player, step up to the responsibilities that come your way and call out “I got it!” As a team-mate, respect the coach’s ability to assign tasks and listen to the intentions of others.
Words to each other should always be encouraging!
Criticism and condemnation do not build individuals or teams. Christ did not criticize or condemn and He doesn’t want us to either. The Holy Spirit was sent as our coach and He does fine without our assistance. Coaches have a job to do…they instruct and chastise as well as encourage because that is their role. Team-mates need to focus on encouraging and building because that will make a stronger team.
Practice lazy, play lazy.
Sharpened skills, perfected timing and a working knowledge of rules are the result of diligent learning and practice. The game is simply the showcase for the results of diligent practice. The details of our days are the practice field for applying God’s word. A life built and lived moment by moment on the wisdom of God will hold together even in the fiercest battle.
It has been a joy to listen to this coach and watch him work with the young men, our future leaders. It has given me a fresh look at the potential beauty of every sport. The coach’s teaching seems to reflect well the teaching of 1 Corinthians 10:31…’whatsoever you do, do it for the glory of God.’ May it bless you as it does me.
