With my overnight bags in hand, I breathed in deep to take in the freshness of the early morning air. I loved it out here in the country at Grammy’s house in the woods; it was so far removed from the stale air and the craziness of our inner city apartment house.
The leaves on the trees were shriveling and the gentle breeze escorted them on their final journey to the floor of the earth below. The early morning sun shot beaming rays of light through the tightly woven grove of trees that lined the curved drive. Dew drops glistened on the shafts of grass … whenever the sunlight hit them, the water reflected the rays like a fine cut prism. The smell of decaying foliage permeated the early morning air. I loved it here in the peaceful haven of Grandma’s home.
“Good morning, Kayla,” Grandma called from her front porch. “Hurry on up here; I’ve got your breakfast almost ready.”
“Coming Grammy.”
“Hi Sweetie, how are you today? Come on in honey, I’ve got bacon and pancakes cooking for you on the stove.”
With her arm around my shoulder, Grandma held the door for me to go in.
“Mmmm … that’s smells great Grammy! I am so hungry. Do you need me to set the table or anything?”
“No dear, just sit yourself down, I’ve got everything under control.”
“Whatcha got for us to do today, Grammy? I see you have your long work table set up there over by the window.”
“Well, Kayla dear, I do have a project underway that I thought I’d have you help me with. I was reading in the Bible the other day about how God instructed his people to weave together fabrics of different colors and textures to make curtains and coverings for use in the tabernacles of old. The weavings often times told stories or symbolized something important that God wanted his people to pass down to future generations. So I got to thinking that I’d like to do that for you… I wanted us to piece together a colorful tapestry of my life to pass down to you and your children.
“That sounds so cool, Grammy, show me what you got put together.”
After we finished breakfast, she took me by the hand and lead me over to the table. Spread out on the surface was a huge collection of colorful, carefully cut squares of material. She picked up a piece of paper with the patterns and colors all mapped out. She compared them to the corresponding swatches laid out on the table in front of us.
“See all these different colors, Kayla? See how some fabrics are smooth and others kind of rough and grainy. They are all different because they symbolize different times and experiences that I have gone through to get me to where I am today.”
“The pattern I have chosen to use is called, “Trip Around the World.” It starts out in the center with a single nucleus square that I will build upon.”
“I chose a neutral color, tan, to signify the beginning of my life … you know how we all start out as an unassuming single cell and then our bodies are built outward from there.”
“Cool analogy, Grammy … go on, tell me more.”
Well, my childhood was quite wonderful and so I’ve chosen calm, warm colors and patterns for that part. Then as a teen, I experienced some rougher times, so the texture of the material changes and the colors and patterns become darker and a bit ‘busier’. It was during that time that my heart began crying out to God for a change….”
“Let me guess…. Red came next, so is that when you gave your heart to Jesus, Grammy?”
“You are a good guesser, Kayla. The red symbolizes the blood of Jesus that came to cover me and give me a new life… notice the color scheme once again changes to brighter, happier hues.”
“This is so great, Grammy! Can we just get started? After we get each row done, how about you tell me the story about the next color and so on….”
“I am excited about sewing together this awesome tapestry of your life!”
