She appears whether I’m staring at a blank computer screen without an idea in my head or when I can barely type fast enough to match the speed of images exploding in my brain. Up she pops, reminding me to jot down “deodorant” on the grocery list. Or that I should really get at that mysterious stain on the living room carpet. Or the cat’s claws need trimming. Or the car needs an oil change and lube, the books on the bookshelves need alphabetizing, or I should clip out all the inspiring room layouts in the last three years worth of Architectural Digest currently cluttering the spare bedroom.
Even if I do not succumb to the urge to get at any of these things, I will inevitably need to make a list of them for future reference. The Nag is winning. Because I will then need to find a writing instrument (why are all the pens in the cup on my desk dried out?). And then a piece of paper (how can a writer have not a scrap of paper in sight?). The Nag’s victory is complete when I begin to organize the junk drawer I am rummaging through to find the aforementioned items. Hope of actually writing something is gone, leaving no forwarding address. I really need to formulate a plan to conquer the Nag. I’ll make a list. Wait, I have to find a pen…
