I used to think that having a really cool walk would get me noticed. I mean all
the classic movie stars had them. You could cut off their heads and still know that it was
John Wayne, Carry Grant, or even Jerry Lewis. I used to watch my sister put a stack of
books on her head, stand elegantly with perfect posture, and parade across the room like a
princess. I tried it and well, looked even more foolish than I already was. My father took
great pride in being able to take a pre-toddler and get them, almost without fail, to take
their first few steps. He would stand them up with their backs to the wall, and they would
find that it was impossible to do anything but walk, or fall on their faces. Of course he
would catch them if they started to fall.
If you think about it, isn’t that what God allows us to do also? Life certainly can
put our backs to a wall, and then we must fall on our face, or move forward. God is
always there to catch His children and never faults them for stepping out in faith. Even
when we’re frightened to death, not wanting to make the wrong move, His arms reach out
and encourage us to take a few well planed steps.
A friend of mine allows me to be perfectly honest about the stuff I talk about. He
never makes me feel foolish or stupid. I know when I’m stupid, and usually it’s when
I’m in the middle of explaining what a good idea I’m having, and haven’t taken the time
to think it through. My mouth seems to be about three seconds ahead of my thoughts.
By the time I realize what I’ve said… ooops, too late!
Like the time I was working in a stereo store and just finished polishing up a
whole wall of expensive components. I no sooner put the polish away and caught a guy
with his hands on everything that I had worked so hard to make picture perfect. To make
matters worse there was a sign right in front of him with large block letters saying,
“DON’T TOUCH, PLEASE ASK A SALESMAN FOR HELP!” Outraged I screamed
without thinking. As he turned around I heard my words echoing repeatedly as I stood
their feeling about two inches tall. “Hey, what’s the matter you blind?” Sure enough, he
was.
I was telling this story to my non-condemning friend while I was rubbing my
aching sore feet. My mouth once again took control as I complained what a hard day I
was having because I continually had stood on my feet. He just smiled and said “Me
too!” It was then I came to my senses unable to swallow my words. My friend has no
legs.
At this stage in my walk with the Lord I’m certain that I have a permanent “Nike
Swish” logo embossed on the roof of my mouth from the constant insertion of my size
thirteen foot! I must admit that my friend often makes me feel that I’m the one with the
real handicap. He reads about his walk with the Lord on a different level than I do. One
that I’m sure is much more in line with how Jesus meant it to be. “It is the spirit of law
not the letter of it” we learn. We are to walk in the light, the bible says, not in darkness.
Would someone please turn on the light, I can’t see! More often than not I am also the
one who is truly blind.
