There are times when someone would ask us and not have the slightest interest in the response. You could have answered any given way and the person who questioned replies “great, great†and scurries on their way, having no clue that you did or didn’t answer appropriately.
What do you think would happen if were to ask a person the question “How are you doing?†And then fully look at the person, wait for the reply, and make a relative comment that would indicate that you actually heard his or her response? How many times do you think your attention would surprise or even startle the person you are in conversation with? Could it be possible that your thoughtful and timely response might change the life or the direction of the one you are speaking with?
Interesting thought. Interesting challenge.
It is an age where everything is instant and we are busy running to and fro. The term “busy†has become a badge of honour worn to declare to the world that I have value and self worth.
May I ask a simple question? Why?
Why do we think we have to be busy in order to feel important? Why do our lives and the lives of our spouses and children have to be so scheduled that we don’t sit down together at the supper table and enjoy what God has given us? Are we aware that there are families - families - that never take the time to interact and enjoy each other’s company? They barely nod at each other as they pass in the hallway of their home. Strangers.
God help us. He tells us our value is because He created us. He loves us. A creator takes pleasure in what He has created. He wants to spend time with us. With me. Is the sport or the meeting or the appointment more important than the relationship that sits before me?
How many times do I sit down to do my devotions and don’t take the time to answer the question God places before me? A tender question such as “How are you doing my child?†I cannot truly answer that question if I don’t take the time to hear it.
Our lives are being spent. Wrinkles and age spots and grey hairs will happen even though we spend huge amounts of time and money trying to prevent them, fix them or surgically remove them. We look in the mirror and we gasp in surprise at the natural progression of what was planned from the beginning. Our changing appearance is to remind us of something very important.
It is time to take stock and stop living as if this world is our permanent home. It isn’t.
What will matter? Everything I do in and through the power of God will last for eternity. How do I know? I know this because God says so. All you have to do is read the book of Ecclesiastes and realize that Solomon lived long enough and experienced enough, with enough “stuff†that he spent his last words trying to warn us to invest in Godly things as opposed to worldly things. When someone has “been there, done that†and then cares enough to share what he has learned - listen up.
The next time a meeting or a sporting event tempts or the call for another commitment begs you to take time away from what is truly important - remember that we are to strive to live a life of balance. There is nothing wrong with sports, commitments, or enjoying fun things in our lives. The key word is balance. We live a life that is out of balance when these things consistently come first.
It will take much effort, wisdom and prayer to guard your time and your relationships. When the world and circumstances clamour for your attention, ask God what really matters. Spending time with Him first somehow helps us to prioritize and see a little clearer. Matthew 6:33 (NIV) But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well
Come and take a seat. Let’s sit awhile and talk about how great our God is. How are you doing? Really.

Okay, in that case, nice writing. You did in fact make some very good points. Actually you made 3! How one should answer, "How are you feeling?" How we should take time with our family and how the earth is not our permanent home. A lot to squeeze into 750 words! Even though you did do a good job. Ohhhhhh, I hope that was helpful!!! *worriedly biting nails*
