My favorite word in the entire English language is serenity. Not the way it sounds or the way it is spelled, but what it means. It means peacefulness, tranquility and poise. Personal peace to me equals serenity. When I think of, or talk about, serenity, I’m reminded of a funny story while Christmas shopping several years ago.
I have a ring with the word serenity wrapped around it. I wanted to find another ring or a chain with a charm that had serenity on it as well. I went from store to store looking for anything with that word on it. I was unable to find serenity on any item. I remember saying under my breath, “Why is serenity so hard to find?” I had to chuckle a little bit at my statement.
In talking with a friend, he explained to me that I was looking too hard for serenity and I was not letting it happen, or find me. I was trying to force serenity onto myself. Inversely, my personal peace was interrupted because I was not allowing it to come from God. I was trying to create it myself.
John 16:33 I have said all these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble: but take heart! I have overcome the world.
Only God can give me the peace and serenity that I ultimately strive for. He has done this by allowing his son to die for us and wash away our sins, giving us peace. God wants us to have a peaceful life. He yearns for us to have serenity. He knows however, that this can only come from having a relationship with Him. No matter what we are facing, we can have calmness and joy. We just have to turn to God and allow Him to give us the strength we need.
I finally figured out that for me, serenity meant that I was okay with things just as they are; basically being okay with being okay. I have stopped trying to force peace upon myself and have allowed God to grant me the serenity I need to walk through life with a feeling of personal peace. I never did find a piece of jewelry with serenity on it, but did find the way to personal peace.
