She had had a miserable day and didn’t mind letting her roommate hear about it. Her roommate was used to the tirades. Nursing is a very stressful profession and she was just venting, again. It’d be ok after she’d had her shower and cup of hot chocolate. She knew her well. They’d grown up together and attended college together too. Sisters if ever there were any. Now they worked together at an inner city hospital. Tough work. Tough patients with tough lives that often spilled blood. She and her roommate chose to try and put them back together again. They would often sit at the bed side of a beaten prostitute listening to her tell her story. Sometimes they prayed with them, most of them had been in church when their grandmothers took them a few years ago. They knew the words the preachers had spoken. Some even said they knew the Word, Himself. Tears of remorse would stream down their bruised cheeks. They tried to live straight lives, but the heroin spoken too loudly. Their pimps controlled its flow. That was their life now and they saw no way out. She and her roommate knew they would see them again. Why bother with the lowest of the low? What good did it do if all they wanted was their fix?
She and her roommate knew what those women wanted. They knew who they were. They knew that Jesus had come for those women just as He had for them. They would not quit tending them, they would not quit listening to them, and they would not quit praying for them.
After the hot chocolate and a shower, she and her roommate sat together and prayed. The power and presence of the Lord healed the caregivers’ wounds from that day’s labor. He readied them for the next day’s labor. They prayed for their patients one by one and He rescued those that would follow Him. She and her roommate knew three that escaped the bonds of darkness and addiction. They worked together at the local shelter. She and her roommate prayed for the work of the shelter.
After the hot chocolate, a shower, and a time of prayer she and her roommate knew that joy comes in strange wrappers.

I would've liked to have seen the characters come alive more, either through dialogue or perhaps changing to first person (one of the nurses, or even the prostitute).
