January 1, 1980 was one of the most devasting days of my life. You see that was the day my “DAD” went home to be with the Lord. He was only fifty-two years young (52). My mother was only forty- two years young (42). She had three children to take care of, ranging from ages 20, 18 and 4 years. My mother has remained a widow until this day. She focused all her energies on her children ensuring that we were brought up to have reverence for the Lord. She also ensured that we all received a College education in our chosen careers, namely, Computer Programmer, Chef/Teacher and Funeral Director and Embalmer respectively.
My “DAD” death was unexpected as he was not sick. He was given a clean bill of health the day before from his medical doctor. I was devasted because I was the one who had taken him to the doctor the day before. The night he passed we talked about many things as we always did. You see I am the eldest child and he asked me to promise that I would always “look out for my younger siblings (sister and especially my brother). I have kept my promise. I can assure you that I have seen many blessings in my life because of this. There were many times when I was afraid that I would lose my mother at the same age as my “DAD”. However, God has spared her life and she has the assurance that she will live her promised years, seventy years (70).
The above scripture verse has been much comfort for me over the years, as it has increased my faith that one day I will see my “DAD” again, and o what a glorious day that will be.
