BREAK With the World
Romans 12:2


Do you know how many definitions there are in the dictionary for the word break? I was amazed when I looked it up and began reading. Some of the definitions of the word break were as follows: fail to conform; to put an end to by force or strong opposition; to disjoin; reduce to pieces with sudden violent force; to smash; I think you can see what I mean. There are many other definitions besides the ones I mentioned.

As I read and pondered the definitions of the word break, Romans 12:2 kept running through my mind. (“And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…“ KJV) In this verse, I believe Paul is telling us to break from the world when he said, “…be not conformed to this world.” The definition of conform is to have the same form or character of something, to act in accord with. Paul is saying we are to put an end to being like the world, by force or strong opposition. In other words, don’t be like the world in character or actions.

Now you might ask, “How can we do that?” Look at the next part of the verse and it will tell you that it can be accomplished by being transformed and by the renewing of our minds. You will notice that it says be transformed, not reformed. Reformation will not work; it is only as Jesus Christ transforms us that we can break with the world. When we ask Jesus Christ to save us, He transforms us (changes the nature or condition of). He gives us His life and our minds are renewed (made new by Him). The things we used to like (sin) no longer appeal to us, and the things we used to hate (Jesus Christ, church, Bible reading), we now love.

Maybe you’re thinking, “But I received Christ and I still have trouble being conformed to the world.” There is one more thing that must be done, we must YIELD to Him (Romans 12:1 …“present your bodies…“) He won’t make us break away from the world. We must be willing to break away and let Him help us (Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ, who strengtheneth me.”) KJV. As we draw closer to Him, we will break away from the world.

As Christians, we are called to live in this wonderful world but are warned not to be of the world. Good thought.

Good message. I stumbled over the following:" I still have trouble being conformed to the world". I assume you meant: "I still have trouble with not being conformed to the world." The first sounds like you want to be conformed to the world, and I know that's not true. I always revisit this passage at the beginning of every year when people talk about "resolutions". It's not resolution we need, but revolution - that transformation that you have explained so well. Keep up the good work.
