The olive green sea rolled and pitched the small craft sideways. The tiller cracked, split, and fell useless at his feet. The next wave capsized the craft. The fisherman struggled against the surge, his gear sunk beneath the surface. His vest floated away from him. The next wave overpowered him and he surrendered to the force of the storm. The rescue team found his small craft after the squall cleared the next day. They declared him missing and presumed drowned.
The newspaper article about his death appeared in section D, page twelve, the obituary. His wife and three children survived him, according to the release, as well as a brother and his parents. The archives held his quarter column space for the public record if anyone ever cared to search for it. His life was finished as far as the world knew.
At home it continued. The chair at the head of the table, his desk in the study, the side of the bed that had been his remained empty. The space reverberated from his absence. The book he read to his children laid open on the night stand waiting to be finished. His favorite jacket drooped across his valet chair. His barbecue apron sagged from the hook near the kitchen door, the stains from his exuberant cooking style still vivid. The coffee mug decorated with a happy stick figure family sat empty on his work bench in the basement. A thousand empty spaces reminded the survivors of his life, and their loss.
Some describe space as a void, a vacuum, nothing. Some know that is not so.
