The President of the United States of America is coming to our small town, yeah right, I think to myself.
The radio continued, "And he's staying with a local family, the Smiths, who were hand picked by the president himself…"
He's coming to stay with us!?! Why us? Why me? He knows I exist? I sat on my bed in complete wonderment. Sure, I've been a Student Ambassador for the US in Australia and New Zealand and I keep my grades up, but I'm surely not the most eligible person in the town. Why me?
Scrambling off the bed and running to the family room I shouted, "Mom, Dad, the President is coming to stay with us." I continue when I saw their unbelieving faces, "I heard it on the radio; he hand picked us. He's staying overnight! I know it sounds unbelievable, but we'd better get busy! Come on, this house needs a lot of work!"
After reaffirming his actual arrival in two days, Mom and Dad joined the race to clean up. I worked so hard on the guest bedroom, that even the underneath side of the bed sparkled. Our house became the cleanest in all of the state.
This was just too good to be true! I, myself, had always dreamed of becoming President of the United States but felt it would never really happen. Now, I suddenly felt like I could be Queen of the World, not just rule the country.
Those two days were the longest two days of my entire life. It felt as though he would never come. On top of that, he was three minutes late. But he came!
The President of the United States of America was at my house to stay overnight! All I could do the first few hours was gawk at him. I kept thinking to myself. Say something you idiot!
Finally, the shock wore off, and I began to listen to him. He wasn't talking about all his achievements. He was asking my parents about their hobbies, jobs…lives. This really opened my eyes. He wasn't a showy ruler, but humble. He asked about our interests and opinions. There was something about him that was different than anyone I had ever met before.
He asked if there was a local church we could recommend for the next day, Sunday. We had never attended church but we knew of one just up the road that we told him about.
All this chit-chat made us feel more at home in our own home than ever before. We felt like we had been friends for the longest time. He didn't make us feel lower than himself, but equal. He wanted friends rather than host and hostesses. We just dropped everything and talked and thought of just being there for him as old friends would be.
That next morning we all went to church together and our family has continued to go ever since because we found many people there who had the President's same attitude toward others.
We found that we had been missing something before this event, that now had suddenly changed our lives. In fact, we've been good hosts ever since, just trying to be hospitable, rather than entertaining.
