“We’re angels Bob. Time is immaterial and distance nothing but a wordâ€
Bob looked up “Oh, Lord why did you put us togetherâ€
The radio crackled to life; Axl Rose sang, “...just a little patience.â€
Bob flicked off the radio, “Always the same song. Is a tape stuck? Why are we in such an old car anyway? Why not a Camaro, or even a minivan.â€
When john didn’t respond he counted the rust spots on the bonnet, pushed a foot over a hole in the floor to block the rush of hot air, got bored and said, “John?â€
“What Bob?â€
“Why don’t we have air conditioning?â€
“You can wind down the window.â€
“Why’d you choose such a lousy car? Why’re we so far from the target?â€
“You can walk if you want,†said John
“How far away are we?â€
“400 milesâ€
“Is there anything to eat?â€
John sighed, “No, Bob.â€
“Where’d you get this car, won’t someone miss it?â€
“It was abandoned, I fixed it up, no-one wants it anymore.â€
“Maybe you can bring balance to the universe?â€
“How?†said John
“You fixed the car, perhaps you can break the radio, I am getting sick of the same song over and over.â€
“You could fix it.â€
“Nah, it’s your mission, miracles are your area,†said Bob, “I usually make these trips in a nicer car.â€
John lifted his foot off the accelerator, slowing down.
“What’s wrong?†Bob asked.
John’s shoulders sagged, breathing deeply he said, “People tend to be a bit, impatient.â€
Bob looked at him, “Really?â€
John peered into Bob’s eyes, “Yesâ€
Bob pointed forward, “Eyes on the road my friend. Safety firstâ€
John accelerated, “Everywhere I go I see impatience. If people just understood that all they need to do is wait on God they’d see that everything else is just, noise on the journeyâ€
“I don’t get it.â€
“Well, if we just waited on the timing of God, life would be easier, we needn't worry about our desires, or what we don’t haveâ€
“Like a nice car?â€
“Exactly.†said John, “They just need to relax. Just because they’re stuck with something they don’t want, doesn’t mean they won’t get what they need in the end.â€
The radio went quiet.
Bob said, “I once had a car, huge wheels, awesome color, massive engine and,†he looked at John, “an air conditioner.â€
John placed his elbow on the door and slapped his hand over his eyes.
The radio started again, Bob increased the volume, “I think I’ll see how many times this playsâ€
After a while John snapped it off. “Six times is enough. It’s broken.â€
“Like the air conditionerâ€
John swerved and they bounced onto the side of the road. Glaring at Bob he said, “You never stop. Always about the same thing. Can’t you just sit and wait patiently?â€.
“Can’t you just accept me for who I am? I’m unique!â€
“As unique as the 7 billion people on this planet? Always the same. We can’t change the car Bob. When we’re finished you can have whatever you want, okay?â€
“Why not now?†said Bob.
“Be patient, you know what’s to come, all this is temporary.â€
Bob looked around, “We’re in a desert, all I have is a bush, which I think you ran over.â€
John dropped his head onto the steering wheel. Bob continued, “God’s people want the good stuff, they want the comfort - “
“Like an air conditioner?â€
“Yes John, they want comfort and a nice house. They live in the now, but what makes them different to youâ€
John bolted upright “I’m completely different.â€
“God has spoken to you about patience before, but you’ve been impatient about his people.â€
Head tilted, John said, “Has God sent you to take care of me?â€
“You need to see that the impatience of man, and your impatience of their impatience, are the same.
“When did I become impatient?â€
“It creeps up slowly,†said Bob
John looked at him, “Are you going to be annoying for the rest of this Journey?â€
“How can you ask that? Of course, I am. I’m uniqueâ€
John sighed. “OK, let’s get back to it.â€
The radio crackled to life, John Denver sang, “Take me home, country roads…â€
