Connolly strode down the passage and beyond the open door to Michelle’s bedroom. He stopped, took a step backwards and peered into her room, “You looking a bit dreamy there my princess."
Michelle beamed up at him, “Oh Dad, I’m so excited about my gap year. This passport is like a magic wand, it opens up a whole new world for me to explore. I've always dreamed of living and working in London and this passport has freed up that opportunity for me. From London I can pop across to Europe and flit around wherever and whenever I want. â€
Her father chuckled; his eyes glistened with love, “Just one of the perks of being adopted into this family.â€
Michelle sat up, “I’m the luckiest girl in the world to have you as my dad. You are my hero for adopting me."
Connolly sat down on the armchair opposite Michelle’s bed and gazed at her, “That was always the plan. Even though we already had Matt and Ruth, I knew there was a little girl out there, somewhere in the big wide world, who had to become part of our family in order to make it complete."
Michelle placed her passport onto the bedside table, “I sometimes think of my birth mother and wonder what would have happened to me if she had not given me up for adoption.“
Connolly leaned back in the chair, “My heart breaks for your mother. As much as she wanted to keep you, she knew that you would become trapped into her life of prostitution, drug addiction and every other soul-destroying vice. She didn’t want to imprison you the way her own mother had ensnared her. With love in her heart, she gave you up in the hope of a better life for you.â€
Michelle furrowed her eyebrows, "I don't really understand why you wanted someone extra – someone like me. I came from such a sordid background. That cocktail of drugs my mother took while she was pregnant could have affected me badly. I once overheard grandpa say that it had been a long process and a costly exercise."
Connolly looked straight into Michelle's eyes, "I remember the day we adopted you so clearly: After all those months of red tape, hoop jumping and waiting, the Chinese authorities finally issued your new birth certificate, with mom’s name and my name emblazoned on it as your parents. With one arm I hugged you close to my heart and with my free hand I grasped my ownership papers of you. I wasn't letting you go. In that moment, every minute waited and every penny spent could never compare to the precious life that I held in my arms. I would have emptied my bank account and bankrupted myself if that’s what it required."
Michelle jumped off her bed, padded across the room and plonked down onto her father's lap. She wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug, "Thank you. Thank you for rescuing me from the life of being a sex slave controlled by some evil monster.â€
She snuggled down further, “And thanks for loving me the way you do.â€
Connolly wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead, "The delight is all mine. I love you my precious child: you fill my heart with such joy."
