He packed his bag, actually his Toy Story backpack, and he’s hitting the road. He has had enough of us and is going it alone. He has his super hero figures, a few books (Good Night Moon, Berenstain Bears), and even some toy building blocks. He doesn’t seem to have need for food and clothing. He says he will be happier living somewhere else. He tells me that I will miss him and I’ll be sorry for telling him he could not jump up and down on the couch.
Then he opens the door and walks out. It is dark and cold outside and as I peek out the window, he looks small, vulnerable, and scared. He stands on the doorstep for a moment, then turns around and opens the door to come back in.
I pretend I haven’t been watching him and greet him like he has been gone on a long far-away voyage. He says that he did not want me to be sad, that’s the only reason he came back. I tell him thank you and open my arms for him. He hugs me back, and then steps out of the embrace to tell me he’s hungry. He knows I will feed him. I will always feed him. My son tried to escape tonight. In so doing, he found his escape. He calls it home.
