He says : ‘I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will populate the earth. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."
I do not need to pinch myself to find out if I am dreaming. I have already learned the significance of dreams from my grandfather, and my father Isaac. The powerful message of the dream must be so impactful that I just have to respond.
'Lord, You're indeed in this place, and I didn’t even know it’
Previously, I have made a royal mess of things-I have cheated my twin brother’s birthright, and then go on to deceive my Dad into believing that he is blessing my older brother. It looks like there is simply no solution, only a god would appear and sort everything out.
I remember I am in a no-man’s land-- well, it is all my fault. I have fled my home in the promised land and is bound for the land of my ancestors, searching for a wife. For now, I am in the middle of nowhere, far from all that is familiar and safe. Away from my doting mother, I can feel how acute my isolation. Terrified for my life, I wonder what the future holds. Worn out from heightened stress and physical exhaustion, I fall asleep, not in a sheltered tent but out in the wild, with a stone as a pillow.
It is there, while I am vulnerable, with my guard down, that God comes to meet me. There is so much to life in God than meets my eyes. In this dream, I am granted a look behind the scenes. Personally, I am introduced to the God who has been second-hand until that moment. Well, I now realise I am not alone: God and his angels are all around me. I have not lost out to God's blessings: God’s covenant is unchanging. Neither am I bereft: the promise of family and land made to my father and grandfather is given to me. I am not in the middle of nowhere; I am on the holy ground.
Truly, Jacob's dream encourages us to press on to face life challenges. Sensing the Lord’s presence and His angelic beings is the most organic solution to our problems. We must believe that God is with us in the midst of afflictions or tests through hardships. A direct intervention from God day may not help us cope with crafty people like Jacob's father-in-law, and those who want to revenge, like Esau.
