Vic had slipped an envelope under her door during the night.
'Friday’s challenge if you dare. 1200hr deadline. The photo is your starting point. Use the token. If you fail, you pay.'
The photo was of a clock face and on the back were the progressive clues.
The 9:48pm south.
Red circle exit 3.
Blue arrow 500 metres.
30 stairs down.
Exchange this photo at the Jailer’s Box—which is where she’d received a Holey Moley Café serviette that had ‘Yellow sign’ scrawled on it.
She runs her hand through her hair and glances around again. She can’t see one. Anywhere. There’s only five signs here. Nine if you count the street name signs. None of them are anything close to yellow. She steps to the corner and looks down the intersecting road scanning the scene for the third time. She pats her handbag contemplating her progress. She is never allowed to use her mobile phone on these challenges unless absolutely necessary; unless she was giving up. She was not ready to concede defeat. She just needed to figure out what she had missed. Or try a different angle.
Beth checks her watch again. 11:45am. She notices the scruffy looking man shuffle across the road. She tries not to directly watch him but he seems to be moving toward her. His clothes are baggy and well-worn and appear to have not been washed in a very long time. She can’t tell if he’s actually elderly or if he’s just been living rough. She glances away again breathing deep, searching for fresh perspective.
“Excuse me, lady,” he asks in soft, husky voice. She looks at him but he makes her feel uneasy and she can’t hold eye contact.
“I don’t have any cash on me, sorry,” she replies tersely turning to look up the street again.
“Please lady. Do you have anything for me?” he asks hesitantly.
“No. I just told you, I have no cash,” she answers stepping away from him without a glance.
“Even just a…a small something?” he persists shakily. She ignores him moving back down the street the way she had arrived at this place trying to see if she’d missed something.
“Nothing at all?” he pleas. Beth halts. Her mind twists as she deliberates. She slowly turns to stare at him. He cringes slightly and shuffles back a little. She puts her hand into her pocket and pulls out a joker card. She observes it closely rolling it over in her fingers a couple times. Then she looks at the street man again.
“Would you,” she queries pointing the card toward him, “accept this token?” A relieved smile spreads across his face. He steps forward cautiously and takes the playing card.
“This, then,” he says, swallowing as he reaches into his coat, “is for you.” He pulls out some crinkled paper and holds it out to her. She just stares at it unmoving. It’s a yellow envelope with Vic’s signature on it. She smirks a little and slowly takes the envelope and opens it.
'Well done, my brilliant Beth. I’m waiting three blocks west at The Valley to dine with you. The $50 is for the kind, cooperative gentleman who got a lost looking woman to give him a joker card.'
